Rehabilitation is the process of helping people get back to what they love to do, achieve goals and a high level of function or improve quality of life. Possibly after an injury, surgical procedure, chronic pain (lower back pain) or illness (Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis).
Rehabilitation does not always reverse or undo the damage caused by disease or trauma (although it can). It also identifies weaknesses, impairments, and imbalances that caused the issue in the first place. A plan is then formulated to allow the person's body to heal.
Rehabilitation should start as soon as possible to speed up recovery. The programs that combine different components are likely to be most effective.
Rehabilitation is an integral part of physiotherapy. The process generally involves assessment, manual therapy and exercise therapy (whether it be activation, stretching, mobilizing, strengthening, posture, coordination). Knowledge is power and it’s important that as part of the process people are taught to manage their load, change their habits and train their bodies to move better.
